We immediately and intuitively know the difference between random scribbles and a valid written script we simply don’t yet understand. There’s a reason for this. All written languages behave similarly. They rely on just a few visual motifs and repeat them in predictable patterns. Attaching meaning to the motifs and learning the patterns is how we absorb a written language. How we “own” it for ourselves.
